Last night I wore bed socks, my feet were so cold. I make no excuses for my pathetic-ness, maybe it's my age?.... as although its cold, very chilly, we have very efficient central heating, and I was snuggled under a 15 tog, goose down duvet, but my feet were freezing. Little May always sleeps curled up next to my side of the bed on my jumper, all night, every night you'll find her there. I found her a special blanket, but I think its a smell thing, she likes my jumper best. She is one of those cats who has to sniff everything to check out if it is safe or not. The very first time I ever picked her up, was in the animal rescue center, quite a sad place, as they often are. It was freezing cold, she was basically in a big concrete cage, the lady asked if I'd like to hold her, said she was quite timid but if you let her sniff you, she should be ok...I was wearing a big soft scarf, she put May in my arms. Straight away she buried her face in my scarf, curled up and started to purr, I thought my heart would break. I'm pretty sure she remembers that day, although some would say I'm completely bonkers, she feels safe and trusts me, she is a Me cat, my familiar, maybe we were just waiting to find one another? Anyhow thats May, she's gorgeous and I love her!
Those of the keen eyes amongst you, will notice a rather nice blanket of the Granny variety, on the armchair behind May.
I saw the man throw it in the waste for landfill dump, whilst recycling my tins...I admit to almost running to retrieve it before it was buried forever.
I went into town after to the posh fabric shop, they also sell housey things, and lo and behold they had wool blankets, just like mine for heaps of money, I did smile to myself as my original 1950's blanket was quite free. I bought it home, put it on a gentle wool wash, and hung it over the banisters to dry, it washed up lovely.
Also spotted these and the basket above, it makes me want to cry the things people throw into landfill...
I'm enjoying my sketching at the moment. It's a therapeutic pastime....
I have made some of my sketches into cards and will be popping them on to my Etsy shop very soon. It has taken some courage to show you my sketches...but I have decided that if I can't be myself and express who I am on my blog, then there isn't much point in writing one.
I have thought very much about this and so am being honest and true, you will probably have noticed I have been redesigning and tweaking! I feel so passionate about re-using what we have as much as possible and creating less waste......
I have been making lots in my spare time,
The bunny dolls will be listed in My Etsy shop at the end of January too, I am beavering away so I have some nice things to list.
| Blanket bunnies, made from all vintage materials. |
I will make another blue doll as I have fallen in love with Myha in her fair isle jumper :-)

It is always a risk making things that come from your head, your imagination, as you are never sure if other people will get the stuff that goes on in there.... When it becomes a creation. But this year I feel the fear!! Sometimes you have to take risks.....don't you think? and see where it leads you.....
be brave, I guess.
Any how, I'm rabbiting, I hope you don't mind. Have a good day, no snow here but they do say its coming in at the weekend,
Keep smiling....
Love Sophie x

No shame in the bed socks - sensible not pathetic! We are great believers of them in our house when the temperature dips!

Sophie that post made me feel like I wanted to hug you for sounding so wonderful and caring. Couldn't be better that May found you. I hate each time we go to re-home cats as we wantto take them all home. Really hard thinking of them all needing a loving home so I just do the best for the ones we can home.
ReplyDeleteGood that you're eagle-eyed and didn't let that blanket disappear, how wicked if it had.
Have a good day and I can't wait to see all your creations.
X
Thank you :-) I send a hug back xx
DeleteHi Sophie, I have a cat just like yours...well she looks different but her nature is the same...she is definitely my cat ..sleeps next to me every night since we got her 17 years ago..follows me around the house..won't let anyone else near her hehehe even though they try !! Gail x
ReplyDeleteYou always write so warmly and beautifully makes me feel cozy on this cold morning. May was def waiting for you by the sounnds of it she is beautiful. Great find with the blanket it upsets me to with the amount of what people throw away but i always say to myself you cant always rescue everything no matter how much it hurts. Loving your little dolls there so cute and so vintage looking. Enjoy the rest of your week. dee x
ReplyDeleteSophie love reading your blog, it is always so interesting. You cat May was very lucky to find you she is so cute. I don't understand how people throw such good things away. They must have toooo much money. Your cards are really good well done.
ReplyDeleteRosezeeta
Absolutely be brave.. Sophie be who you are... how else can others love the real you... I'm working on that too!
ReplyDeleteWell saved! I've had to stop going to dumps and the like because I just can't bare all the waste.. until I have outlets for moving it on my little home is officially FULL!!
Love to see your creativity and blog...
No cats here, but we often look at them in the pet store and part of me thinks, maybe, one day, I just might bring one home (right now it's all about the dog, who is also snuggly). Your bunny dolls are so nostalgic ... love their shy little faces!! At our landfill everything is sorted right there (electronics, wood, etc), but it all is dumped into dumpsters set below ground level. Once it's thrown in ... it's lost!! Worse than lonely cats at the pet store!! Wendy
ReplyDeleteAww what a lvely story about May, Sophie! Love the blanket, sooo lucky you were there! We're not allowed to take anything from our tip, it's a sin the things that are destroyed! A lovely post, yours always are, and so nostalgic! I remember little rabbit dolls, I will hav to treat myself when they go in your shop.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day and stay snuggly!

ReplyDeleteJune
Lovely cat, lovely dolls, lovely cards, lovely blanket!!! What a delightful post :). You are lucky being able to retrieve items at you local dump - ours is excessively manned and you're not allowed to get anything (couldn't anyway - you have to tip things into various skips from above. Such a waste! Have a good week x
ReplyDeleteI always go to bed with bed socks on - I actually cannot get to sleep unless I my feet are warm.
ReplyDeleteLove your sketches! LOVE. THEM!!! And also your blog tweeking - looks fab!
I can't sleep if my feet are cold so it's always socks for me in the Winter. I love your land fill finds, it just about breaks my heart when i see such mindless throwing away too and there is nothing more exciting knowing you got something for free when it costs silly money in the shops!
ReplyDeleteYour rabbits and dolls are just glorious Sophie and your sketches so lovely too,you have nothing to fear,it's all perfect! x Penelope
I have cold feet too not withstanding a warm house and teen tog down duvet. Perhaps it is an age thing, I have a mind to knit some cashmere bed-socks, I have begun knitting my own socks quite recently and they are so much lovelier than the bought sort - perhaps I shall resume sock darning now too once the hand mades begin to wear. I love your granny blanket - and your collection of old reels of sylko. Is the lovely embroidered cushion in front of the blanket a vintage find too?
ReplyDeleteI love your May story, I'm so glad you found each other. I haven't needed the bed socks yet but I have had scarf and mittens on, in the house! :) x
ReplyDeleteBe yourself lassie, we all love who you are.
ReplyDeleteJust today, bought myself some fancy pens and pencils to doodle with; after seeing your sweet sketches, think I'll put them away for the grandchildren.
LLX
You are not to put them away!!!! please.... x
DeleteWhat a beautiful story with May, she must have been waiting there just for you to find her. Thank you for sharing your makings, they are wonderful and you deserve to be very proud of them! Also, on the bedsock front, I'm definitely living in them right now too.
ReplyDeleteMay is so sweet bless her...she must have been waiting for you to rescue her...I love your work Sophie.. just carry on doing it your way...so very clever
ReplyDeleteIam ok with the feet its my hands that never warm up (so I always wear gloves)

Hi Sophie - I think I began reading your blog just before you bought little May home so kind of feel like I have "shared" her journey with you :-) though I dont get to pat her unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog SO much Sophie - you have inspired me to go to my craft room today as its cloudy here & not so hot. I adore your granny rug - I wouldve rescued it too :-)
Wearing bedsocks is perfectly A - OK as I tend to wear mine round as kind of slippers sometimes too. Look forward to your posts all the time Sophie - thankyou from across the miles, Hugs, Julie :-)
Reading this post with a big smile on my wrinkly old face - thanks, Sophie.
